I had long admired the spiritual artwork of Meinrad Craighead, and I was thrilled to discover that she attended Clarke University, just a few miles away from me! Being able to visit some of her earliest prints on campus is a true gift. I also was at last able to appreciate her book, “Crow Mother and the Dog God,” in Clarke’s library. I created this shrine in honor of her.
Printing onto fabric, cutting that into stars and circles, and stitching that in a pattern was a new technique for me. The delicate purple and gold beads keep the eye moving across the pattern, with a batik design at the base.
