Copper Mother

Copper has long been my favorite color. I associate it with life, blood, and God. Acquiring this oddly shaped frame was the perfect opportunity for me to create a copper Mother. It took several sketches to see if a Theotokos, a full-body figure, or a more traditional icon would fit – at last I settled on Her extending Her embrace outside the frame, with the draped autumnal organza resembling foliage.

I quilted the background and sewed a vintage doily, dyed with acrylic paint, as Her halo. I 3d printed Her face and hands, which have been both sewn and glued to the piece. Organza drapes the top and bottom, lined with leaf-shaped beads. Embroidery, applique, and plastic, glass, resin, wood, and metal beads decorate the entire piece.

A wire has been attached to the back for easy hanging.
